オーストラリア、ニューサウスウェールズ州北部のバンドジャルンカントリー出身の地域アーティスト、シャーロット・ヘイウッドとエドワード・ホーンによって実現した魅力的な試み、HUMUSを紹介します。彼らのプロジェクトは、インスタレーション、パブリックアート、実験的建築、没入型シアターデザイン、サイトスペシフィックスカルプチャー、コミュニティエンゲージメント、ビデオ、サウンド、テキスタイル、教育学など様々なメディアを軽々と横断し、学際芸術の領域を掘り下げています。石垣島では、バイオミミクリー、エコ美学、マルチナラティブ、互恵性の探求に深く根ざしたクリエイティブなコラボレーションを展開しています。マ・ウミ・レジデンシーでは、織物職人、大工、船大工、音楽家、その他の地元の職人たちと会話を交わし、洞察を深め、コラボレーションを行うために集まっています。彼らの芸術活動の中心は、多様な文化との交流と没入であり、文化的、政治的、生態学的な規範を批判的に検討しながら、その独自性を尊重することです。
Through stories, practices, objects, and materials, they propose an open-ended installation that captures the richness of the island across multiple formats—video, visual narratives, and notebooks. The project highlights the complexity of island territories shaped at the edges of their relationships with the wider world.
For their final presentation, Lou and Dimitris discussed roots and muiakkon — a wartime technique of growing sweet potatoes underground, hidden and protected in the soil.
Through interviews with farmers and cultural actors across Yaeyama, they uncovered a rich diversity of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other root crops — each carrying stories of survival, exchange, and care. More than food, these roots form a living ecosystem and a shared heritage that sustained communities through crisis.

Lou Perret is a Swiss anthropologist whose work focuses on the intersections of globalization, local territories, and cultural practices. He holds a Master of Arts in Social Sciences (Anthropology) from the University of Neuchâteland is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Asian Studies, specializing in Japanese language and culture, at the University of Geneva, with an exchange at the University of Tokyo. His research includes fieldwork on Tinos Island, examining the relationship between global dynamics and local communities.
Dimitris Theodoropoulos is a Greek architect and co-founder of Hiboux Architecture. He studied at the National Technical University of Athens and Université Paris X Nanterre. His work combines architecture with art, performance, and research, spanning buildings, installations, and scenography. He has participated in international exhibitions such as the Athens and São Paulo Biennales and has also taught architectural design in Greece.
He is also the founder of an experimental art residency program based on a Greek island, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between artists and architects.
