MUR 004 + CHARLOTTE HAYWOOD / EDWARD HORNE + HUMUS

Ocean of Waves develops textile and plant-based wave detectors that combine soft materials with electronic circuits. Using conductive threads, sensors, and responsive structures, a soft radar will detect subtle changes in environmental and electromagnetic fields around the Yaeyama Archipelago.
A spider web antenna made of copper wire and ramie intercepts ionospheric activity. Coupled with a dedicated electronic circuit, it renders audible atmospheric phenomena such as sferics and whistlers.
Audrey recording across Ishigaki, Kuroshima, Iriomote, Taketomi before presenting the project results back at the residency in Ibaruma.
Many thanks to the textile community who shared valuable material and knowledge and all those who joined our great series of residencies.

Audrey Briot is a French textile designer, technologist and researcher. She is cofounder of DataPaulette, a collective and hackerspace dedicated to research in textiles technologies and soft materials.
Her work is dedicated to the impact of emerging technologies on the preservation of savoir-faire, especially in textiles. She is focusing on non-verbale communication transmitted by textiles which represent for her an entire culture and even a substitute of writing. In order to do so she relies on anthropological researches going back to the Paleolithic. Following this direction she connects machines and computers to make textiles which are memory vectors with added data and interactivity.
Audrey's work has been exhibited at Ars Electronica, BOZAR, and ISEA and published at CHI, ISWC, and DIS.
