TEMPORAL LANDSCAPES >>> Pumice Drift
An explosive volcanic eruption occurred in the Ogasawara Islands on 13–15 August 2021, bringing unprecedented amounts of floating pumice on Ishigaki’s shores, approximately six months later. The northern coastline—lined with mangroves, reefs, and estuaries—was quietly transformed. Beaches turned grey, tidal creeks clogged. The pumice moved with wind and tide, unsettling the rhythms of the coast. A slow-moving disturbance across the temporal landscape, carried by drift and memory of other islands.
This natural event created temporary deposits of pumice, reshaping local ecosystems and coastal landscapes. Carried by summer monsoon winds and currents, the drifting pumice became the starting point for the MUR006 residency project. In Fall 2023, Natasza Minasiewicz explored its potential as a lightweight building material—a kind of natural concrete—developing a new architectural language to construct an outdoor cooking station at Green Beach.
